Counselling Services BAME Counselling Hub Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Counselling Hub A listening ear. Without prejudice. Without judgement. Recognising culture differences One in four people will encounter mental ill health problems at some stage of life. Citizens from racialised minorities (British and Non-British) backgrounds are known to have different levels of risks for mental health problems. Cultural responses to mental health problems differ between different ethnic groups, often affecting the likelihood of accepting professional help. Un-equal access to appropriate counselling and psychological services for individuals from non-white British backgrounds is a well-recognised reality. At NCS we understand that your health and wellbeing may be materially affected by adverse experiences throughout your life, due to your race and or culture. We are actively engaged in addressing this inequality through a dedicated and empathetic service for all persons of colour, regardless of age, disability, gender, belief and sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership. New Community Project We are working in partnership with three other local BAME-led organisations to provide new and enhanced mental health support services to young people from BAME communities living in some of Nottingham’s most disadvantaged areas, through our innovative Headwize project. The partners include the region’s only BAME-led provider of housing with support (Tuntum HA), leading abstinence focused drug and alcohol recovery service for individuals and families (BAC-IN CIC Ltd) and a community-led grassroots Group (Chayah Group) helping survivors of domestic violence and young people facing challenges. Our support helps young people tackle problems and improve and sustain positive mental health, avoid crisis and improve their lives and their futures though: - Mental Health Awareness sessions and support – helping young people to understand and talk about mental health problems, overcome stigma and shame, recognise signs and symptoms of problems, understand triggers, learn coping strategies and know where to go for help and support. - One to one and structured group support sessions including support with mental health and emotional problems, relationships, substance misuse, homelessness and housing and problems related to offending/anti-social behaviour. - Positive and healthy activities including sports sessions. - Structured and in-depth therapeutic interventions including accredited counselling and recovery support that will help young people to overcome trauma and tackle the underlying causes of poor mental health and emotional problems. - Family support including help and advice for parents, grandparents and siblings.
